International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

Life in the 21st century, in an interconnected, globalized world, requires critical-thinking skills and a sense of international-mindedness, something that IB Diploma Programme students come to know and understand.

The IB Diploma Programme is designed as an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students, normally aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond. The programme is normally taught over two years and has gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities.

Diploma Programme curriculum

The curriculum is made up of the Diploma Programme core and six subject groups. Made up of the three required components, the Diploma Programme core aims to broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills.

The three core subjects are:

  • Theory of knowledge (TOK) , in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know.
  • The extended essay (EE), which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper.
  • Creativity, activity, service (CAS), in which students complete a project related to those three concepts.

Students take subjects either at the Higher Level (HL) or at Standard Level (SL). Generally, subjects studied at higher level will reflect the student’s area of interest and specialisation, and will be covered in greater depth and breadth than subjects studied at standard level.

Students on the IB Diploma Programme take six subjects, normally with three at the higher level and three at standard level. Students must make one choice from each of Groups 1, 3, 4, 5 together with a second language from either Group 1 or Group 2, and a second choice from Groups 1 to 4.
